Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas is being linked with a return to the Premier League in the Sun newspaper.
The Spaniard moved to the Catalan giants two summers ago, after what turned out to be a protracted big money move.
Ironically, there have been question marks over
whether Cesc Fabregas fits in with the Barcelona style of play, despite
the fact that he came through the Barcelona cantera at La Masia.
He
played in the same junior teams as the likes of Lionel Messi and Gerard
Pique, yet he still does not seem to fit into the Barcelona team.
At
times, he has played as a striker and a false number nine, but his
natural role is probably the role that Andres Iniesta plays alongside
Xavi in the centre of the field.
However, Iniesta is one of the world’s best players and Barca would be foolish not to select the Spanish international.
That
means that Barca has had to find a new role for Fabregas in his two
seasons at the Nou Camp. The midfielder has also played as a striker for
his country, but that is definitely not his best position, despite
Fabregas finding the net 20 times in 60 appearances for Barcelona in two
years.
Fabregas is now being linked by the Sun to a
£40million move to former-club Arsenal and English champions Manchester
United. Arsenal did not want to leave their captain two summers ago, but
Fabregas felt the pull of Barca and returning home impossible to
resist.
His time at Barcelona has not always
been plain sailing and he was much loved at the Emirates Stadium. I am
sure that most Gunners fans would welcome the midfielder back with open
arms. Whether he wants to leave the Nou Camp is a different matter.
New
Manchester United boss David Moyes is reportedly looking to strengthen
his central midfield area and Fabregas is a reported summer transfer target. Moyes is a known admirer of the Spanish international and will be heavily backed by the clubs owners this summer.
The
signing of Fabregas would send out a signal that the Scot is big enough
for the job at Old Trafford. During his Everton days, he had to make do
with signings players for very small amounts. At United, it is a
completely different financial ball game.
Signing
Fabregas would also be a coup for Moyes, if he signs him ahead of
former-club Arsenal. If he does head to England I believe he is more
likely to return to his former-club, than join Premier League rivals
United.
Fabregas is unhappy at not being a regular first
team starter at the Nou Camp. With the arrival of Neymar this summer,
his first opportunities may be reduced even further next season. It is
obvious that he is frustrated at the lack of regular first team
football.
However, when he moved to Barcelona he
must have expected that he was not going to play every game. Barcelona
have some of the best midfielders in the world in their ranks and could
not have expected just to walk into the team.
He
has the same problem at international level with Iniesta and Xavi the
first choice for Spain. He cannot do much about that, but he can do
something about his club career.
It is unknown whether Fabregas will stay at the Nou
Camp or not this summer. If he wants guaranteed first team football
then he cannot stay at Barcelona. At this point in his football career
he needs to be playing regular first team football.
A
move back to the Premier League would not be the worst move in the
world for the 26-year-old, but I have a feeling he may stay in the
Catalan capital and fight for his place next season.
